How to easily Remove the U3 smart software from your USB Flash Pen Drive. 'The U3 uninstaller application is available directly from U3'.

Once a U3 application is installed on the drive, you can specify the order in which it appears in the LaunchPad, and tell it to start every time the drive is plugged into a computer. It's possible to lock down the U3 smart drive's data partition with a password so that files will be secured from foreign eyes, complete with password hint. To run EditPad Pro from your U3 Smart Drive, navigate to the EditPadLite or EditPadPro folder on the drive using Windows Explorer, and double-click EditPadLite.exe or EditPadPro.exe. EditPad will not show up in the U3 Launchpad. '[The Create Portable Installation feature] is a very welcome addition to your program.

Most avid users of USB storage media have recently begun to realize that a vast majority of USB flash pen drives manufactured today are packaged with the U3 software. While this software has some neat features and package includes, a seasoned computer user may not need or desire to use the U3 smart software.

My main reason for removing the software particularly from my 'sandisk cruzer 2.0 GB micro' drive was due to software annoyance. Everytime I plugged in the drive, it would initiate a splash U3 software startup program and create yet another virtual drive on my system. Since my major concern is the installation and boot of Linux on these devices, I have no need for third party helper software. The U3 uninstall process has also helped free up some additional space on my pen drive allowing for even more storage flexibility.

Note:The uninstaller will remove everything you have saved on your USB Pen drive. I would recommend a full backup before proceeding. At this time there is no installer so you cannot easily re-install the U3 Software once un-installed.

Okay, now that we have got our USB set up, ensure that you cycle the USB - That means to take out, and plug the USB back in. You should have seen both a CD drive AND a USB drive show up in 'My Computer' when you plug the USB back in. Just so you know..

This is a very simple VB.NET program, it works by getting all the drives and searching for the 'fake-u3.ini' when it is found, it opens it and opens the EXE specified in the INI.

Also, you should be aware that this doesn't really work the way it did when I first wrote this instructable. Microsoft have disabled CD autorun, so you will have the same outcome as with an ordinary USB drive when running Windows 7 or higher.
